BUFFALO YACHT CLUB JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

To encourage young people to have a lifelong involvement in sailing and the sailing community by:
  • Promoting seamanship, sportsmanship and small boat sailing skills from Learn to Sail
    fundamentals through Competitive Racing opportunities.
  • Offering a safe, educational and engaging sailing program.
  • Providing an enjoyable experience that promotes camaraderie, strong friendships and an
    enduring interest in sailing.
  • Actively involving youth in the sailing traditions of the Buffalo Yacht Club.

SWIMMING INSTRUCTION:  The ability to swim is a necessity for all children who spend time near any form or water.  This is an eight week Saturday morning program taught by a YMCA certified instructor.  Each classes is approximately 45 minutes.  Class sizes are limited to allow for individualized attention.  Beginner (9:30 – 10:30 am); Intermediate/Advanced (10:30 – 11:30 am).

INTRODUCTION TO SAILING:  This is a six week Saturday morning  program for 7 to 10 year old students who want to get acquainted with sailing small boats.  This is the perfect way for your child to develop an interest in the sport and fun of sailing!  Classes run from 9:30am to noon.

BEGINNER / INTERMEDIATE SAILING: This program allows the beginner and intermediate student (ages 8 and up) an opportunity to develop sailing fundamentals, seamanship and safety skills in a fun and enjoyable environment on and off the water.  Boats used will be Optimist Prams and Nutshells.  Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm for two 4 week sessions.

ADVANCED SAILING: This program is for the child who wants and is ready for a more significant sailing challenge.  It is designed for children ages 10 and up who are able to demonstrate a solid understanding of and aptitude for small boat handling under all conditions.  While not specifically for the serious racer, racing skills and tactics will be the focus of this group as a means of developing more advanced proficiency.  This group will sail separately with their own coaching staff.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own Optimists, Lasers or Laser Radials, and will also sail in the club’s 420’s. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm for two 4 week sessions.

BYC JR. SAILING RACING TEAM:  This team will be comprised of students in the advanced/racing program, subject to acceptance of your application by the Jr. Sailing committee.  Racing team members will commit to participating in racing activity outside the class time, including interclub races during the week, Tuesday night Laser racing and Wednesday night Optimist racing in Abino Bay, and two or three weekend regattas.  All fees associated with attending and participating in regattas, including regatta entry fees, additional instruction, transportation fees, etc., will be split between all students attending the regatta.  Parents are expected to assist at various times during the summer when preparing for and traveling to regattas.  This is the perfect place for the child who is ready to hit the regatta circuit!

AFTER HOURS CARE: Back for 2008, the BYC is offering supervised care of junior sailing participants beyond normal class hours.  For those parents who may find it difficult to pick up their children at 3:00 or 4:00 PM, a class instructor will be available until 5:30 PM each class day for on-shore supervision.
