Great Race Results 2008
After a frustrating day on lucky Friday the 13th, where the wind died to a whisper, and the competitors could only complete 3 out of the projected 8 flights, they bounced back on Saturday sailing an impressive 12 flights which allowed for the completion of the round robin. Coming out of the round the teams had the following scores.
1st Place - Team Becker 9 wins 0 losses,
2nd Place - Team Loe 7 wins 2 losses
3rd Place - Team Vantol 6 wins 3 losses
4th Place - Team McLaughlin 6 wins 3 losses
5th Place - Team Wickwire 4 wins 5 losses
6th Place - Team McAuley 4 wins 5 losses
7th Place - Team Canfield 4 wins 5 losses
8th Place - Team Lewin 3 wins 6 losses
9th Place - Team Lucas 2 wins 7 losses
10th Place - Team Darroch 0 wins 9 losses
Out of the round robin the top four teams advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Team Becker elected to race against team McLaughlin and won the first two matches and advanced to the finals. Team Loe raced against Team Vantol, losing the first match but bouncing back to take matches 2 and 3.allowing them to advance to the finals.
In the Petit Finals, Team McLaughlin lost the first match to Team Vantol but then stormed back taking the next two matches and capturing 3rd Place. Team Vantol ended with a 4th.
In the Finals, Team Loe took the first two matches, against the previously undefeated Team Becker, with some brilliant start work and proper reading of the winds on the course, electing to go to the starboard side. With their back against the wall, Team Becker put on a classic show of Match Racing fundamentals, to take the next three matches and win the 2008 Great Lakes International Challenge Cup, the IRA G. ROSS GREAT RACE for the James H. Righter Trophy.
On Saturday and Sunday, the umpire corps was added to with Yuki Takahashi, a Japanese National Judge who came to the event to Umpire.
